Not Your Typical AM/FM Radio

What is a ham radio? Ever wondered how the word ham was connected to the radio? Is it any different from the usual AM/FM radio that most of us are familiar with? Well, they are the same but they are also different. In essence, they are both radios that receive and transmit radio frequency signals from one location to another. They use the same fundamental concepts of signal transmission. In that aspect, they are no different from the typical radio. The term "ham" is supposed to have originated only from the word "amateur" and it is not entirely sure where, when or why it came about.

Although these two types of radios share the same function they are different from one another because they use distinct operating procedures. For one, you first need to get a license before you can operate a ham radio. This is because this kind of radio has the ability to tune in to a higher frequency range than that of a regular radio, which is most often used during emergency situations. Delicate, as well as private, information can be sent during emergencies and it would not be good if someone inexperienced would get in the way of the communication. Another major difference of the ham to the common radio is that its user can both receive and transmit information whereas the general radio can only receive signals from a broadcast station. The means of communication now is two-way rather than one-way and is much more interactive. That is also why they are used like telephones especially on urgent situations.

Other differences include some technical stuff. A ham radio owner usually will have to do a bit of work regarding the radio antenna. There are those which are commercially made and can be installed easily while many are more often built from scratch by the owners themselves after careful designing. Also, these radios use various bands of frequencies in order to connect with other radios that are maybe too far for a typical AM/FM radio to reach. You may be able to get in touch with someone at the other side of the world if your radio is powerful enough.

Lastly, hams tend to cost much more than regular radio systems. They are pricey because you will have to purchase various kinds of tools for the radio to function properly and for maintenance purposes. The common radio typically comes in one package while a ham is not the same. You might have to buy a transceiver, a wattmeter, among other things.
